The request

Vertical axis centrifugal pumps use rotation to impose speed on a liquid, which will then be converted into a flow. The customer needed to replace a set of worn bushings with the function of guiding the main axis of the pumps themselves. The request concerned the choice of the most suitable metal for the outer shell and the use of a type of elastomer that would support the dry start of the plant for about 30 seconds. The customer had also requested that the longitudinal channels be correctly sized in order to ensure the correct amount of water flow.

Our Solution

Thanks to an accurate analysis of the operating conditions of the pieces, it was possible to identify the most suitable materials. Following a study conducted with a certified rubber supplier, a nitrile compound that supports dry starting has been developed and tested. Thanks to software developed internally and validated some time ago during the ISO 9001 verification, the Caravel technical office has designed and validated a model for the correct sizing of the longitudinal channels on the inner surface of the rubber.
