The request

A Swedish turbine manufacturer Kaplan and Francis needed to create a set of flanged bushings in CC491K bronze and NBR rubber starting from a mechanical drawing complete with dimensions and tolerances and for which he entrusted us with the production order. The bushings should have worked on the guide shaft, diameter 160 mm, of the turbine immersed in water.

However, not having sufficient knowledge, the customer asked us to make these bushings with a rotating shaft/rubber tolerance and with the number and size of the channels that would have guaranteed a constant flow of water for lubrication and cooling of the rotating shaft, which could reach a maximum speed of 5 meters/second.

Our Solution

Thanks to the mathematical modeling software, we have developed a drawing of the inner surface of the rubber. We have defined the number and size of the lubrication channels and the ideal tolerance between the rotating shaft and the inner diameter of the bushing rubber. Through this modeling tool, validated during the ISO 9001 periodic audit, we have ensured a water flow exceeding 400% of what was required, providing the customer with ample safety margins.
